Kudal is located at .[1] It has an average elevation of 20 metres (65 feet).
As of 2001[update] India census,[2] Kudal had a population of 13,643. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Kudal has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 75%. In Kudal, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. Kudal is a taluka which comprises villages like Nerur, Sarambal, Sonavadepar, Tulsuli, Mulade, Baon, Bambuli, Bambarde, Valaval, Kavathi, Chendavan, Awalegaon, Kadawal, Oros, Vardhe, Digas, Bhadgaon, Kalsuli, Ambrad, Pokharan, Kusabe, Kunde, Gudhipur (Pinguli),Salgaon, Mangaon, Zarap, Pawashi, Kaleli, Naneli, Ghavnale, Bhoyache Keravde, Mandkuli, Gothnadevi, Nerukhe, Paat, Humarmala, Aandurle etc. Kudal is one of the beautiful taluka in the Konkan region. Malwani and Marathi are the most widely spoken languages followed by Kannada.
Kudal is one of the oldest settlements in Konkan region. The Kudal proviance was given to Gaud Saraswat Brahmin known as Soma Goma Prabhu who was working as revenue officer in adilshahi destiny at Vijapur, People succeeded him stayed in Kudal Proviance later known as KudalDeskhkar Gauda Brahmin, in 1700 centuray Khem Sawant from Madgaon attacked Kudal Desh and killed Narayan Prabhudesai who was ruler at that time and captured the area and founded his destiny at Sawantwadi.
Kudal has year around water supply (a rarity at most other places), still agriculture was never the big business. Rather the status of a Peta or trading town converted this little town to a fairly prosperous Bazaar town. Kudal is the heart of the sindhudurg district. The main attraction at Kudal is the Ghodebav where horses come and drink water by getting down in the well. Kudal is mainly famous for the Kudaleshwar temple where there is a fare or Jatra every year. Moreover, Kudal city is mainly famous for various hospitals situated here. Hindu Colony is by far the most developed and biggest colony of Sindhudurg. Kudal is also famous for Shviji Maharaj's forts situated at "Chikkewadi" named as "Rangana Garh" near about 3.5km above from Narur village. Kudal has got "Zilla Parishad" head office located at Oros which mainly a central location for whole Sidhudurga district. It has got a huge spread industrial area "MIDC" besides town having hundreds of small scale industries running currently which is main source of income for most of factory workers.
